How's Your Sense of Balance?

Seesaw.jpgBalance is a requirement for good health, one that isn't talked about very often.  Our culture, and by default it's people, lack balance in nearly every aspect of their lives.  There is a very real sense that things are spinning out of control for people.  This is evidenced by our growing beltlines, personal debt, increasing rates of depression, increased dependence on medications, increased stress and fatigue, decreasing life expectancy, and the increasing numbers of children and adults developing a chronic disease.

The fact that children are becoming sick in such large numbers should be frightening to everyone.  They are like the canaries in the mine or the amphibians in the ponds, they are our first indication something is definitively wrong with our culture.  We're screwing up badly and appear to be picking up speed.  Children shouldn't be obese in the numbers that are occuring.  They shouldn't be developing Type II Diabetes (formerly known as Adult-onset Diabetes).  The canaries are wobbeling on their perch.  They are showing us how unbalanced our culture has become!

We need drastic change in health and healthcare.  Not in the politically popular ways that are commonly discussed in election years.   We need change in how our culture views health and disease.  There is no culture of prevention, no culture of Self-care, no culture of government and industry making it easier for the average person to stay healthy.

What we commonly hear is "We need better prescription drug coverage plans" and "lower prescription drug prices"...Does anyone ever ask "Why are we on so damn many drugs to begin with?!"   Our culture is led to believe the path to health comes through a prescription.  It's a cultural thing.  How many of us feel jipped if we go to the Medical Doctor and don't get a prescription?!  If they deny you a medication, maybe they are actually doing their jobs!!!

Take a second today and think at how balanced your life is.  How do you feel physically, mentally, emotinally, spiritually? What could you realistically do to improve things?  Research shows us that small changes done consistently over time yield huge health benefits.  What small changes could you make to bring your life closer to balance?
