Collicky Babies and Intestinal Dysbiosis

As a parent, there is nothing more difficult than seeing your newborn child in discomfort.  There is a real sense of helplessness knowing that your little one isn’t feeling well and that you’re powerless to help them.  In our clinic, we train parents to understand the tell-tale signs of infant distress and teach them next steps towards helping the child feel better.

Intestinal Yeast InfectionINTESTINAL DYSBIOSIS

One of the things that can produce acute discomfort in an infant is something called “Intestinal Dysbiosis.”  Intestinal Dysbiosis is when the child’s gastro-intestinal tract has the wrong kind of microorganisms living in it.  At birth a child’s intestines have no bacteria them.  After a few weeks the child’s gut becomes innoculated with microorgansims from the environment.  Depending on the type of microorganisms the child is exposed to, the child may soon develop problems with digestion that cause them to be fussy, gassy, or have constipation or diarrhea.

The wrong kind of intestinal bugs attack, irritate, and inflame the lining of the child’s intestines.  This can make things very uncomfortable.

Bad bugs can also cause food to ferment instead of being properly digested, this causes gas and bloating.  This bloating can be very uncomfortable for the child and may cause them to arch their back to avoid pressure on their tiny, bloated abdomens.  Back-arching is a good indication your child is having a problem with their tummy.

The tiny perforations in the gut caused by Bad Bacteria and Candida (yeast) can predispose a child to something called “Leaky Gut Syndrome.” Leaky Gut Syndrome is when large, undigested food proteins enter the bloodstream before being properly broken down, this can generate food allergies and further increase the amount of GI Dysfunction.

So having the wrong type of bugs in their tummies can cause problems for an infant.  For more information on what kind of bacteria is harmful to your infant and what to do about it contact our office.  (319) 266-7788
